Insurance 2025 - Designing and Building the Future
Speaker: David Smith
We are witnessing a shift in the traditional ‘innovation’ model influenced by two drivers of change -- the rising servicization of products and the primacy of the consumer experience. As a result, digital platforms are becoming the tools of choice for building next-generation products and services around consumer experience and scaling entire ecosystems in the digital and physical worlds. Such platforms will be transformational for companies and blur industry boundaries as these platforms reshape industries into interconnected ecosystems.
Such blurring will necessitate the design of truly customer-centric products and services, as well as a new organizational approach ... A new design-driven paradigm is necessary and very different from traditional innovation and R&D. In the age of business agility and shifting consumer demand, it is no coincidence that design-driven companies have outperformed the S&P 500 by 219% over the 2005-2015 decade.
Innovation and design – along with data - will become strategically aligned to the core values and vision of an organization. Designing business and organization models that allow this will become a pre-requisite for success. To assume that new technologies, processes and ways of thinking can be grafted onto legacy structures is a damaging fallacy. This redesign must be holistic – encompassing back and front ends, and oriented towards employees just as much as consumers.
Hear from David Smith, a globally recognized futurist and innovation leader on what this means for Insurance. How will insurance business models need to change? What is the role of platforms? What characteristics do you need in leaders to make this shift? How fast is the shift occurring? How do you plan and execute this shift?

The Customer Journey: Best Practices and Pitfalls
Speakers: Ron Zarrell, Sue Blanco
Many insurers take a very tactical approach to digital strategy and investments, focusing on discrete capabilities rather than taking a business-need-driven approach. To make matters worse, the capabilities are too often based on internal stakeholders’ views rather than the external “customer” – the classic “inside-out” approach (aka, “build it and they will come”). The more effective approach is to deeply understand your customers by mapping their interaction journey across the value chain. This is the “outside-in” approach that will shape the digital strategy and priorities. Hear from these companies on their approach and the impact.

A D3 Data Strategy: Data Models, Data Warehouses and Data Lakes

Data and analytics consistently rank in the top 3 priority areas of insurance … yet insurers struggle to define a way forward. As data and analytics become an increasingly strategic competitive differentiator, insurers need a path to accelerate their data mastery maturity to achieve business differentiation and optimization through data. Yet insurers struggle with truly leveraging enterprise level data due to inaccessible data formats, a lack of trust in the underlying data quality, inconsistent semantics, and an implementation methodology that doesn’t align with today’s fast paced and disruptive market. Insurance specific data solutions can provide capabilities across all areas of insurance from policy, billing, claims and distribution to gain control over compliance and governance needs. Leveraging proven and robust data models and enterprise data warehouse solutions provides insurers with a significant lift. Leading the Market Shift: A C-Suite View
Speakers: Ed Ossie, Adam Sandler
The business models of the past 50+ years (based on the business assumptions, products, processes, and channels of the Silent and Baby Boomer generations) will soon be an ocean away from the business models of the next generation, including the Millennials and Gen Z, as well as many in Gen X, both as personal buyers and owners of businesses. It requires a new business paradigm. We must redefine and re-envision insurance, embracing business components that work in the new context of people, technology and market boundaries and discarding the pieces that are outmoded or irrelevant. Most organizations can’t simply flip off their pre digital switch (traditional business model and products administered on traditional systems) and flip on their digital age model (new services and products on modern, flexible systems that will handle digital integration and better data acquisition and analysis). So, the shift will require steps. Those steps will operate as both a bridge and a proving ground, while the traditional system is still operational as a firm foundation and the new foundation is being constructed. The steps are active, ongoing, and they overlap. Hear from this panel of executives on how they are leading the market shift.

Dr. Ronan Tynan is truly a modern day “Renaissance Man.” Faced with numerous challenges throughout his well-documented life, he has persevered with enormous passion and determination. He attributes his success to his faith and the knowledge that the Man Above guides him through every door he opens. Introduced to international audiences as a member of the Irish Tenors, Tynan quickly became known for his unique voice and irresistible appeal.
Following his mother’s advice to always follow your dreams, Tynan decided to launch a solo career, and has achieved the fame and adoration that could have existed only in the farthest reaches of his dreams. Though Ronan enjoyed singing as a boy, he did not seriously consider formal voice study until he was 33, when he was well into his residency as a physician. His quick success is a typical development in a life of extraordinary achievement.
Born with lower limb disability that threatened to sideline him throughout his childhood, Tynan was still “as wild as a March hare” when he was a growing boy, riding horses and racing motorcycles. When he was twenty, his legs had to be amputated below the knee after an auto accident caused serious complications. Just weeks after the operation, he was climbing up the steps of his college dorm, and within a year, he was winning gold medals in the Paralympics as a multitalented athlete. Between 1981 and 1984, Tynan amassed eighteen gold medals and fourteen world records of which he still holds nine.

A serial innovator, published author and founder, president and CEO of SPLICE Software, Tara Kelly (@tktechnow) is passionate about technology’s potential to change lives for the better. She has consistently channeled that belief into developing technologies that enhance operations, enable better service delivery, and improve the customer experience. This has led to the creation of three customer experience companies and turning an innovative idea into a patented, proprietary technology that harnesses data streams to create personalized, automated messages. The technology solution was included in Gartner’s “Cool Vendors in Insurance, 2016” report and Forrester’s “IoT and Analytics Startups Can Turn Insurers into the ‘Good Guys’” brief.
Kelly – an open source activist and recognized user experience designer – served as a board member for the International Board for Voice User Interface Design, the Canadian Cloud Council, Technology Alberta and is a member of the Entrepreneurs Organization. Kelly’s expertise combined with tenacity, understanding of market trends, and strong communication skills has allowed her to create dynamic solutions and successful teams; not only in her businesses, but also as a community leader on volunteer boards including Food for the Sol, EO Water Walk, and Special Olympics Ontario. Kelly shares these experiences - and her goal of creating a healthy, humane work environment - in the recently published book, Our Journey To Corporate Sanity: Transformational Stories from the Frontiers of 21st Century Leadership.
